The Six Spirits: symbolic details
In Zeng Shan Bu Yi, Ye He Lao Ren criticizes the habit of deciding good or bad outcomes solely from the Six Spirits. The article's central rule is that they supply details of appearance, character and mood; they do not determine success, failure, life or death. Its stark example is a severely weakened focal line accompanied by the auspicious Azure Dragon: fine clothing does not remove the adverse condition. Within this traditional method, the relationships of the five elements remain the primary basis, and the Spirits are neither a rescue nor a fatal verdict.

Reading details through the Six Spirits
Although they do not decide outcomes or life and death, the Six Spirits help describe details and qualities in the traditional reading. They are assigned in sequence according to the heavenly stem of the casting day:
- Azure Dragon — Wood: celebration, banquets, refinement, fertility, tall stature, legitimacy and the left side.
- Detailed applications: a weak focal line with Azure Dragon is interpreted as indulgence or idleness. A moving Azure Dragon that generates and supports the Subject suggests joyful events. In a question about a thief, it can describe new clothes or a tall, upright figure.
- Vermilion Bird — Fire: writing, documents and letters, disputes, arguments, legal complaints, fire and the front.
- Detailed applications: a Response line with Vermilion Bird that moves covertly and controls the Subject is read as a warning of slander or litigation. The source associates fire-related questions with the movement of Vermilion Bird.
- Gou Chen — Earth: slowness, stagnation, imprisonment or entanglement, property, farming, plainness or rigidity, and the center.
- Detailed applications: moving Gou Chen suggests complications and delay. A moving Officer–Ghost line with Gou Chen controlling the Subject is traditionally associated with serious legal trouble or imprisonment.
- Soaring Serpent — Earth: unusual events, fright, recurring nightmares, yin–yang disharmony, entangling fear, deceptive methods and false alarms.
- Detailed applications: in illness divination, the source associates Soaring Serpent with suspicion, fright and disturbed sleep or crying at night. When describing a person, it uses images of a slender build, calculation and insincerity.
- White Tiger — Metal: illness, mourning, bleeding injuries, fractures, surgery, ferocity and the right side.
- Detailed applications: the source reads a moving adverse line with White Tiger controlling the Subject as an image of violent conflict and injury. In illness questions it associates White Tiger controlling the Subject with severe conditions requiring surgery.
- Dark Warrior — Water: concealed matters, theft, illicit sexual relationships, disreputable dealings, deception and the rear.
- Detailed applications: for lost property or theft, Dark Warrior with Officer–Ghost is interpreted as an insider thief or a planned fraud. In relationship questions it is associated with ambiguity or a secret affair.
Passage cited by the source
Zeng Shan Bu Yi states:
凡看六神,只作辅助之用,不可执之为吉凶之本。
When considering the Six Spirits, use them only as an aid; do not take them as the foundation for judging good and bad outcomes.
NoteThe article compares the Six Spirits to clothing colors or outward moods. Attractive clothing, represented by Azure Dragon, cannot undo an underlying condition of extreme weakness; a fierce-looking White Tiger may instead be protective if its element supports the Subject. Its point is that, within this divination method, elemental relationships determine the judgment and the Six Spirits illustrate its details.
