The Useful Influence: An Overview

→

How does one identify a chart’s central difficulty and select its remedy? Finding the useful influence, or yongshen, is a central concern throughout classical BaZi literature; without its underlying principles, pattern analysis remains obscure. Di Tian Sui expresses this through foundation and use: “A flaw can make nobility possible; an uninjured chart is not necessarily remarkable. Remove the flaw in the pattern, and wealth and office follow.”

Core principles across four major classics

Four methods for finding the useful influence

1. Support and restraint: the basic balancing method

This is the most widespread approach to balance:

  • A weak Day Master receives support from Resource and Peer influences, providing roots and backing.
  • An excessively strong Day Master is restrained or drained through Authority, Output and Wealth. The purpose is a stable overall balance that does not topple under excess, considered a basic condition for favorable development.

2. Flaw and remedy: resolving the central difficulty

Zi Ping Zhen Quan and Di Tian Sui emphasize this approach. A completely even chart without tension is described as more ordinary than exceptional. A striking configuration instead contains a major difficulty—for example, numerous Seven Killings exerting heavy pressure—and also a powerful remedy, such as a strong Eating God that controls them. This is the meaning of “a flaw makes nobility possible.” When a cycle supplies the remedy in full, the text associates it with a dramatic reversal and exceptional achievement.

3. Mediation: connecting opposing forces

When two powerful forces are irreconcilably opposed—Metal and Wood, or Water and Fire—simply supporting either side does not resolve the conflict. One seeks a mediating phase as the useful influence. For Metal against Wood, Water provides the connection: Metal generates Water, and Water generates Wood. Opposition becomes a generative sequence, allowing the previously conflicting qi to flow and reducing internal strain.

4. Climate adjustment: restoring the conditions for vitality

Birth in severe winter cold or extreme summer heat may produce a major imbalance of Water and Fire. The first useful influence in this method is then the phase that thaws or cools the chart: climate adjustment takes priority. Without it, the chart is compared to a seed in frozen soil or a dry tree in the desert; other discussions of favorable configurations cannot address the missing conditions for growth.

Di Tian Suistates:

“大凡有用之神,不可损伤;有病之神,切宜去之。”

“An influence that serves a useful purpose must not be damaged; an influence that constitutes a flaw should be removed.”

NoteThe central task is expressed as identifying the flaw and selecting the remedy. The useful influence is that remedy and should remain protected from damaging cycle or annual influences. Effective resolution of the central difficulty is associated with the person’s strongest opportunities for achievement.
