Meaning and associations
- Yin–yang relationship: Seven Killings overcomes the Day Master and has the same polarity: for example, Geng (yang Metal) overcoming Jia (yang Wood). Same-polarity control is described as ruthless and forceful. Its name refers to a seven-position separation. When restrained or transformed, it is called Indirect Officer.
- Core associations:
- Social associations: Military and police roles, martial office, extreme authority, organized crime, sudden events, illness, legal trouble, death and unexpected calamity.
- Personal relationships: In men's charts, a son (or daughter in some schools), hostile people and enemies; in women's charts, lovers, secondary husbands or oppressive men.
- Temperament: Ambitious, decisive, extreme and rough-edged. With restraint or transformation it evokes a great commander; without them, the source likens it to a violent offender.
Favorable and unfavorable conditions across schools
Seven Killings is compared to “sleeping with a tiger”: mastery promises the highest office; loss of control is said to bring death and family ruin.
- Most favorable: restraint and protective transformation
- Eating God restraining Seven Killings: Eating God overcomes its ferocity, regarded as an outstanding pairing. Mingli Yueyan states: “Seven Killings favors restraint by Eating God.”
- Resource transforming the fierce influence: Using Direct Resource or Indirect Resource turns its attacking force into support for the Day Master. This is “Seven Killings and Resource generating one another,” associated with military command or effective authority.
- Yang Blade harnessing Seven Killings: The Day Master uses extremely firm Rob Wealth in its Yang Blade form to withstand Seven Killings. The two fierce forces balance: “Killings without the Blade lacks prominence; the Blade without Killings lacks authority.”
- Most unfavorable: strengthening the threat
- Wealth siding with Seven Killings: If the Day Master is already weak and Wealth further generates Seven Killings, this is called “supporting the attacker against oneself”; the source predicts sudden death or major defeat.
- Mixed Officer and Seven Killings: Direct Officer and Seven Killings both appearing among the Heavenly Stems interweave order and disruption. Clarity requires deciding which remains, such as combining away Killings to keep Officer or vice versa.
Pattern analysis: the month-command method of Ziping Zhenquan
- Conditions for the pattern: The month's main qi is Seven Killings, or it is exposed in the month stem. Whether the Day Master is strong or weak, this pattern requires restraint or transformation.。
- Quality and viability:
- Seven Killings and Resource supporting one another: An especially distinguished configuration: Resource protects the Day Master while transforming the threat.
- Eating God restraining Seven Killings: Compared to rulers and generals, but on the stated condition that Wealth must be absent. Wealth redirects Eating God's restraint into generating Seven Killings—Output generates Wealth and Wealth generates Killings—called “Wealth damaging the pattern.”
- Pattern failure: Excessive restraint—two Eating Gods controlling one weak Seven Killings—is called “perfect law without people” and associated with timidity and inaction. No restraint or transformation is called a broken Seven Killings pattern, predicting early death or poverty.
Configuration dynamics in Di Tian Sui
In Di Tian Sui, Seven Killings is also an expression of the chart's overall dynamics:
势在去其寡,非煞旺宜制而推也
The prevailing force calls for removing the minority; this is not a case to judge merely as strong Killings needing restraint.
Di Tian Sui strongly emphasizes following the prevailing force and transforming the configuration.
If the chart is filled with the Day Master's phase, such as Wood, one weak Metal Seven Killings cannot control it and only provokes it. The text therefore calls for removing that minority influence.
身旺者,必要官杀混杂而发也
A strong Day Master may need mixed Officer and Seven Killings to prosper.
The source presents an exception: an extremely strong Day Master, illustrated by Bing Fire on Wu with Si and You, need not fear mixed Officer and Seven Killings. Powerful Water is instead required to balance Fire.
Applications: luck cycles and overall judgment
- Day Master and Seven Killings equally strong: If both are equally strong, luck cycles favor Eating God or other restraint. If the Day Master is weak and Killings strong, Resource cycles are desired to transform Killings and support the self; Wealth and Killings cycles are most unfavorable.
- Combining away Killings to avert danger: For example, combinations involving the Earthly Branches or stems, such as Yi–Geng combining and transforming, may remove the attacking quality. This is called “absorbed in combining, forgetting to attack”; such a year is interpreted as danger turning into a major life opportunity.
- Health and calamity: Cycles where Wealth supports Seven Killings, or punishments and clashes uproot its restraining factor, such as Eating God, are associated with sudden accidents, lawsuits and serious illness.
Passages from classical sources
Ziping Zhenquan states:
煞以攻身,似非美物,百般宿设,皆欲制伏。
Killings attacks the self and seems no good thing; every arrangement seeks to subdue it.
CommentarySeven Killings is compared to a tiger born to attack its owner. The commentary uses this to establish restraint by Eating God or transformation by Resource as its central rule.
Di Tian Sui states:
身弱七杀旺逢财,老于儒冠;五行之气若要流通,杀旺印绶生之。
A weak Day Master with strong Seven Killings meeting Wealth grows old in a scholar's cap; for the Five Phases' qi to circulate, strong Killings must generate Resource.
CommentaryThe commentary describes Wealth increasing the threat against a weak Day Master rather than nourishing Resource: lifelong study may then yield only poverty. Resource must channel Seven Killings back into support for the Day Master, allowing authority to emerge.
