Meaning and associations
- Yin–yang relationship: In relation to the Day Master, Five Phases the same phase and polarity constitute Peer: for example, Jia (yang Wood) meeting Jia. Their shared polarity brings both solidarity and rivalry.
- Core associations:
- Social associations: Old comrades, sworn partners, competing peers, siblings, personal will and extensions of one's own action.
- Personal relationships: In men's charts, a son-in-law (a minority interpretation) or like-minded companions; in women's charts, close female friends.
- Temperament: Proud, strong, independent and true to oneself; unwilling to submit, preferring to break rather than bend. Excessive Peer is associated with stubbornness, self-will and isolation.
Favorable and unfavorable conditions across schools
Peer is neither favorable nor unfavorable in itself. Its usefulness depends entirely on the strength or weakness of the Day Master.
- Most favorable: support under pressure
- Supporting a weak Day Master: When Wealth weighs heavily, or Seven Killings / Direct Officer combine in attack, Peer is likened to a guard intervening in danger. “Abundant Wealth meeting Peer and Rob Wealth rises like a fierce tiger”: shared strength can bear great burdens and acquire great wealth.
- Establishing the Jianlu pattern: The Day Master is rooted in an Earthly Branches where Peer commands the season, as with Jia born in the Yin month. This forms Jianlu. Its firm foundation, shaped by Wealth and Officer, is said to produce an accomplished person.
- Most unfavorable: rivals taking Wealth
- A strong Day Master losing Wealth: An already powerful Day Master needs no further support. A crowd of Peers then competes for its Direct Wealth and Indirect Wealth . Traditional predictions include loss of a wife, allies turning hostile and even financial ruin.
- Peer resisting Seven Killings in a strong chart: When the Day Master is overwhelmingly strong, Peer is unnecessary as protection. Instead, it is associated with reckless conflict, defiance of authority and repeated punishment.
Pattern analysis: the month-command method of Ziping Zhenquan
Ziping distinguishes Jianlu and Monthly Rob Wealth patterns to examine the role of Peer.
- Conditions for the pattern: This lies outside the eight standard patterns. Peer in the month command cannot directly serve as the useful element ; another component must therefore be sought for that role.
- Quality and viability:
- Jianlu employing Officer: A classic combination: the robust Jianlu Day Master requires Direct Officer to impose discipline and Wealth to nourish Officer and Seven Killings. The source associates this with great governing authority.
- Jianlu generating Wealth through Output: Excessive strength in Jianlu can overcome Wealth; direct confrontation should be avoided. Eating God or Hurting Officer must act as a bridge: Peer generates Output, which generates Wealth. This is associated with wealth accompanied by distinction.
- Isolated Lu without support: A chart filled with Peer, with Wealth and Officer absent or destroyed, is said to indicate a wandering religious life or a solitary, unsupported existence.
Configuration dynamics in Di Tian Sui
Di Tian Sui examines the dynamics of Peer through transformation and following the prevailing force:
劫重财轻,官能去劫,此皆官星有理会
When Rob Wealth is heavy and Wealth light, Officer can remove the rivalry: here Officer has a coherent function.
The passage says that, when Peer and Rob Wealth threaten spouse and resources, a firmly established Direct Officer can restrain them and protect the financial foundation. This is presented as securing resources amid danger.
日一行得气,日两气成形。变者,必从五行之气势也
One phase may obtain qi; two kinds of qi may take form. Transformation must follow the momentum of the Five Phases.
If Peer fills the chart and no Wealth or Officer can restrain it, opposition is said to intensify the force. The prescription is to follow strength: Resource and Peer cycles may form an exclusively strong pattern associated with great power. Wealth or Officer cycles that oppose it are instead described as destructive.
Applications: luck cycles and overall judgment
- Partnership and betrayal: For a weak Day Master dependent on Peer, the source categorically recommends alliances and predicts successful partnerships. For a strong Day Master harmed by Peer, it forbids joint ventures and predicts betrayal and financial ruin.
- Widowhood in women's charts: Repeated Peer without Officer or Seven Killings to restrain it is portrayed as a forceful, unyielding character. The source predicts marital power struggles, widowhood or separation and lonely old age, sometimes two or three husbands.
- Siblings: number and closeness: Older methods counted siblings through Peer; modern readings emphasize their bond. Severe clashes or combinations affecting Peer, such as a clash in the sibling palace, are interpreted as sibling loss or estrangement.
